Sega Master System

It was Christmas Eve, 1986. Dad said I could open one present on Christmas Eve, and it was marked to the 'Family'. It was a big and rectangular box with red wrapping., Out of the blue, it was a SEGA Master System. It came with a cool black light gun called a Light Phaser! It came with Hang On, and Safari Hunt! Dad also bought Action Fighter, and Choplifter! This system was my introduction to post 'crash of 1983' gaming. The graphics! The games! We had come so far from the games I'd cut my teeth on, in the early days of the IntelliVision and the Atari 2600. The Master System sported superior graphics and sound compared to it's rival, the NES. It had real working 3D glasses, and better Light Gun based games. Alas, but it wasn't meant to be the dominant console of it's generation. The NES was an 8-bit juggernaut, with the developer support to match. There are great games to be had for the SMS, like Phantasy Star, Wonder Boy II and III, Power Strike and some great Sonic the HedgeHog games as well. The Master System may not have won the 8-bit wars, but it was a solid system, with many fun games. Nuts to Nintendo, for making it so hard to rent games for my Master System! Like the ads used to say, "Now, there are no limits".
