Yes it's true, Mattel was once a big player in the video game market. Witnessing the runaway success of the Atari 2600, Mattel, the makers of Barbie and Hot Wheels decided they wanted a piece of this new kind of entertainment. Their product was the IntelliVision from the newly created division Mattel Electronics. The system boasted more colours, better sound, and higher resolution than it's rival, the Atari 2600. It had more precise game control (16 discrete directional impulses in the handset), more action buttons plus a numeric keypad that worked with overlays. The 'Snob Appeal' advertising approach, used to great effect with Sports and TV personality George Plimpton, emphasized The Intellivision's "Life-Like" sounds, controls and graphics. Many great games were made for the IntelliVision, with it's sports titles being very popular with those who had a partner to play them with. The Inty had a great movie license with TRON Deadly Discs, and also had one of the first Real Time Strategy games in the still fun to play Utopia. Intellivisions are prone to overheating, controller failure, and internal power supply problems. Fortunately, OSG has been successful at repairing these problems and more, many times over.
